Over the years, it’s been difficult to maintain health and habits. But thanks to a few wonderful people, both are being attained by a change of habits and mindset. Even to the point that, in spite of a household of sick people, I remained healthy for the first time in my life.
One of those individuals is a lady I read about early last year. Her name is Mary Duffy. After the death of her mother, she began working out when she was 59 and never looked back. At age 73, she holds over 30 state records for weightlifting to her name. When told to stop because she’s too old, she laughs and keeps right on trucking.
Another nonagenarian is Edith Murray. At nearing 100 years old, she set a Guiness Book of Records for deadlifting 150 pounds. And she has no plans of stopping any time soon.
There are so many others to admire. Of them, Mary is my favorite. Her spark and enthusiasm is invigorating. But both these women as well as countless others should inspire all of us who have passed their 30 year old prime.
We don’t have to be sick, tired, or out of shape just because we are older.
Yet here is sit…
Even as I reread this article, I realized that I haven’t made much progress.
It’s now subzero temperatures in the middle of the coldest weather of the season. As the icy winds slip in through the cracks of my little office shed, the inspiration to lift a finger leaves me…let alone going for the 30 minute daily walks.
The setting sun doesn’t help, either.
But without movement, the body begins to stagnate. The less one puts an effort into becoming healthier, the less healthy one becomes.
And so, being reinspired, it is time to move out of the office chair and face reality.
It’s cold outside!
